Congratulations to all that swim at either the COR Winter Classic or the DUST Holiday Magic BB/B/C meets!
FAST placed 3rd overall at COR, a meet that brought in teams from all across the state of Texas and the rest of the southern U.S. FAST was less than 300 points behind one of the top 5 teams in the state, Dallas Mustangs. Many best times and TAGS cuts were made. Several relays were withing tenths of achieving Top 16 cuts. The top five teams were:
| 1. | COR | 2192.5 |
| 2. | Dallas Mustangs | 1697 |
| 3. | FAST | 1432.5 |
| 4. | COR | 1310.5 |
| 5. | ATAC | 1168.5 |
The very next weekend, FAST’s BB/B/C swimmers picked right back up with a very impressive performance in Duncanville. We registered the first FAST BB/B/C meet win in recent memory. FAST outdistanced second place City of Plano to win the meet.
These FAST swimmers have earned first time chevrons. Congratulations!

The month of January brings a New Year and new expectations for the Senior group. After the team swam so well at the COR Winter Classic (3rd place overall), many of you will have to re-evaluate and reset some of your goal times for the season. This is also the time to make sure you are working harder than ever before and making all your practices. This will ensure the foundation you built during the fall is improved upon to help you produce some fast results when taper time arrives in mid-February and early March. I can’t stress enough how crucial this part of the season is.
Our next big meet is Greater Southwest, which is only one month away. We would like to be able to do well at that meet, as we did at COR.
Let’s remember that the weather is getting colder now, so I would like to see everyone wearing the appropriate amount of warm clothing. Colds and flu can put a real damper on a successful season if people are continually getting sick.
I hope everyone had a great holiday this year and enjoyed your time off. Now it is time to remember what hard training is all about and take your swimming to the next level!
Senior group’s "Swimmer of the Month" was very difficult to choose this month, so I am going to award this month’s honor to The Entire Seniors Group. Everyone has worked very hard. If you were at the COR meet, you know that there were too many people having "out of their mind" swims to choose only one. Keep up the great work!
Welcome to 1998 everyone! I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Years. I really enjoyed seeing all of you that were able to attend the Christmas banquet. Everyone had a great time, especially the coaches during the desert-tasting portion! 1997 was a very successful year for the Novice I group. Congratulations to everyone that started out in my group and now are in Novice II or Age group. Many of you have been very dedicated and the hard work has definitely paid off.
A team goal of ours for the new year for this group will be to have even a higher attendance at swim meets. The size of the group has no doubt increased, and the swimming talent and determination is abundant, but unless you attend some meets you don't get to showcase all your hard work. Another goal for 1998 is to continue to have lots of fun and to further refine everyone's strokes with technique work. Before you move up to Novice II, I want all four of your strokes as efficient as possible. Efficiency is the name of the game.
Reminder: Remember that Novice I practice starting in January will be held from 4:45 to 5:30 pm.
"Swimmer of the Month" for Novice I is Danielle Maur. Danielle works very hard and has a great attitude at every workout. Great job Danielle!
I would like to start off the New Year by saying thanks to everyone! 1997 was a fun, exciting, unbelievable year for us, and as I have said before it was completely a team effort. I say thanks to everyone because everyone had some sort of role in the 1997 excitement. All of you are in some way part of the FAST success formula, and I hope for the same support and enthusiasm for 1998. Everyone should be proud of what they and the team accomplished last year, but now our goals are even higher than before. I am going to expect the same amount of intensity and determination from all the swimmers as I did last year, plus a little extra so that we can achieve our new goals.
At the COR Winter Classic we saw the magic of team work and hard work on display. I hope everyone will remember how exciting it was to see multiple swimmers with FAST caps on in the finals heat. You should have a craving for the same in future meets. There were many awesome swims at the meet, but I would like to recognize just a few. There are simply not enough pages in this newsletter for me to recognize all the great performances you had. The AAG swim of meet goes to the boys 11-12 200 medley relay that finished just hundredths shy of the top 16 qualifying standard. Richard Kiel (back), Cameron Allred (brst), Preston Hasty (fly), and David Mendoza (free) all swam best times on the relay which finished first ahead of Plano and in dramatic fashion. Great job guys!! I also would like to congratulate Chandler Patton. Chandler finished 2nd in the 50 free with a personal best time of :27.05.
Many of you haven't heard the results of the DUST meet....FAST won!! This is a very exciting victory, especially since we beat out COPS. I am very proud of all the BB/B/C swimmers that attended the meet. The AAG swim of the meet would have to go to Kyle Speer's 500 free. Kyle dropped over twenty seconds and finished a strong second place with a time of 6:22.71! I would also like to recognize Beth Coleridge and Alice Frazier for completing the 200 fly (and doing well at it too).
The 1998 swimming forecast for our team is a good one. FAST is surging into the New Year with alot of momentum from the 1997 excitement. But, we have got some more steps ahead of us to climb. We want to approach this new season with more hunger and determination, and we will have fun along the way. Challenge one another this season so that we can climb the next step.
Advanced Age Group’s "Swimmer of the Month" is a tie between Katherine Fenn and Luann Brawner. Both of these girls have done an incredible job the last three months. I wish everyone on the team were as dedicated as these two are. They both always come to practice looking for a way to get a little faster than the day before. Girls, thanks for modeling such a great work ethic.
I am glad to see that everyone has made it through the Christmas holidays at that we are ready to start TRAINING! We are going to use the month of January to begin our test sets for Novice II. Parents, it is imperative that our swimmers make as many practices as possible. Congratulations to Michelle McClure and Antoinette Briseno on their move up to Age Group.
Antoinette Briseno is "Swimmer of the Month" for Novice II. She had a fantastic meet at the Reindeer Races.
First, I want to congratulate all our swimmers who helped lead FAST to our FIRST PLACE victory at the DUST meet. This meet was a huge step in the right direction for our team and our swimmers. I want to commend all of this group for their work ethic and their attitude. In addition, I want to ask for one more thing: PLEASE, KEEP IT GOING! We are dropping times at every meet and need to keep the momentum going strong. I want to remind our parents and swimmers that EVERYONE will swim the 500 yard Freestyle at the January Meet. Please plan on it and enter it.
Age Group’s "Swimmers of the Month" for this month are The Entire Girls 11-12 Age Group in recognition of their performances at the DUST meet. All of you did so well that I cannot single any one swimmer out for this honor. Great job, girls!
Happy New Years! As 1998 rolls in, many of you will be making resolutions for self-improvement and including your swimming. Whether you swim for fitness, competition, or social objectives -- and these are all valid reasons for being a Masters swimmer -- there will most likely be something you want to do better.
Setting and achieving challenging goals can be an extremely rewarding and motivating part of swimming. What do you want to accomplish? Have you defined your goals? Are they measurable and achievable? Do you have a plan for how to accomplish your objectives? Is your plan realistic? Does your coach know what you are aiming for? Answer these questions positively and know that you are going to be successful in your swimming endeavors.
If you have some recent photos of our FAST swimmers -- especially in those elusive action shots -- we would like to use them for our team’s photo album, website, and possibly in our advertising fliers. Please contact Nancy French or Sherry Smith if you have some prints we can borrow.
