How To Prepare Your Kids For The Upcoming Summer Season

Updated: May 19, 2021

The next summer season is just around the corner and is coming faster than you most likely think. With the upcoming season, it is important for your children to have proper knowledge, education, and skill sets for when they are in and around water, especially if your family is planning beach vacations or likes to spend your hot summer days around the local pool. Here is how to prepare your kids for the fast approaching season.

The best thing you can do for your kids is to enroll them in a year-round swim school like Sigma Swimming Fort Worth

When most people think water safety, they are quick to throw their kids in the first available and/or cheapest swim lessons they can find. And while this is good, it is unfortunate to say that many people wait a long time before they enroll their kids in swim lessons. Often, parents will just throw their kids in swim lessons during or near the summer months, but unfortunately learning to swim is a process that takes longer than a few months. Learning to swim takes much more than a few swim lessons in the summer or one-day, one-week, learn-to-swim events. The best thing you can do for your kids is to enroll them in a year-round swim school now, because once again, for children the process of learning how to swim properly is a long one, not one that can be done in even three months.

Furthermore, along with enrolling your kids in lessons it is crucial that they are enrolled in quality swim lessons. The instructors should be experienced and certified, not just lifeguards looking for an easy job. Here at Sigma Swimming, all of our instructors care deeply about the children that we teach, because we know that swimming is a lifesaving skill for these children. We also offer scholarships for children of families that are in need. At Sigma our goal is always to make a difference in any way that we can. Recently, we had a parent who signed her children up for swim lessons after seeing many children die or end up with life-threatening injuries in the pediatric ICU from drowning. She deals with them first-hand being a pediatric ICU nurse. So, don’t wait for drownings to occur before signing your children up for swim lessons; it may be too late.

Other than swim lessons, you may ask what else you should be doing to keep your kids safe. While there are many measures that can be taken, one of the biggest ones is the proper and improper use of flotation devices. Flotation devices are great tools to be used, but only when they are used correctly. It is important that flotation devices (floaties) are not used as a primary life-saving device for your children, and if they are used then they need to be used properly. You should only use flotation devices that are approved by the US Coast Guard. Floaties that only go around the arms or waist should not be used (most floaties you see in places like Walmart and the dollar store). Even when floaties are being used, you still need to be supervising your children at all times. Instead of typical floaties, you should opt for a Coast Guard approves life vest, as they are much safer.

It is time to start thinking about the quickly approaching summer season, and because for most, summer means beach and pool trips, it’s important that your children are educated properly in and around the water, and that they build necessary and life-saving skill sets to ensure their water safety. Swim lessons that take place year-round by qualified instructors are a key component in your child’s water safety, and if flotation devices are going to be used, they should be the proper approved type. Always remember, you should still watch your children at all times.
