More Time = More Comfort

Happy August, Adult Lessons Swimmers!

This week, we will be shifting gears away from deep water work and going on an intermediary string of stand-alone weeks prior to beginning a new series. However, today's video and topic will be somewhat of an abridged version of many of the topics which we have already discussed either with adult beginners or our deep water series. I hope that most of you found some solace in last week's topic about overcoming your fear of deep water, as our goal was to give mental comfort in addition to the physical. Once again, we play to a similar tune in developing confidence in the water. Although, now we are more focused on just getting in the water in general, and not so much on deep water specifically. Take a look at the swift progressions in the video below!

As you can see, the single video compiled a constant progression of many of the skills that we have discussed week to week. Although the video is not necessarily comprehensive, we do see similarities to our curriculum, including floating and bobbing. Getting comfortable in the water is going to require time. Time = exposure = overcoming obstacles = COMFORT. Just like any other fear or discomfort, the more time you spend in a controllable environment with the water, the less insecure you may feel. Half of your swimming experience is going to propagate mentally. Whether it's just getting in, learning to let go, swimming in the deep end, or potentially future competition endeavors, they all will comprise some level of mental adjustment. Continue to control your environment, and keep working on your new skills!

Fact of the week: Comfort is all about going at your pace. Unlike formal schooling from our past, our curriculum is mediated by the swimmers, not the instructors. The primary focus centers on finding your own level of comfort with each skill and stage. If you would just like to walk, then let's do as much aquatic walking as we can; if you are enthused about floating as soon as possible, let's do it. The fact of the matter is, every level of comfort is going to require time. It is not uncommon for it to take days or even weeks to feel confident about simple tasks in the water. It's your experience and we want to ensure that it is as fruitful as possible.

How do I move up? Attend as many of your classes as possible, communicate with your instructor on your struggles, goals, and where you're at in our curriculum. We also have many adults who purchase a gym membership to 24 Hour Fitness or LA Fitness while they are taking lessons so they can practice 2-3 times between classes.

Looking forward to the start of a new season! It's the best time of the year to be learning how to swim as an adult!
